asked MOMENTUM 1 What do you like about winter riding 2 What is your favorite piece of winter riding gear 3 Please share one tip that makes winter riding more enjoyable 1 I love the cold air getting all bundled up and the darkness when its not interrupted by giant strobing LED helmet lights that is 2 My knee length wool overcoat great for warmth and for keeping you dry in all but a torrential downpour Dave Feucht Portland OR 2 Fenders Not that I take them off in the summer but without them winter riding at least in the Seattle climate would 2 Lake MXZ302 boots Mountain Hard Wear Superpower Transition soft shell jacket and snowmobile bar mitts 3 If youre warm in the fi rst 10 minutes of riding youve probably overdressed Michael Lemberger Madison WI be miserable 3 Long wide mud fl aps on front fenders make a huge difference in keeping your feet dry Jeff Youngstrom Issaquah WA Two and a half year old Quinn DeMaster en route to day care Says mom 1 I love the quietness of biking on snow and the challenge of cutting through ice sludge and traffi c I love feeling strong and fresh I love not having to drive or take the bus 3 Make sure everything is comfortable and fi ts an uncomfortable bike a hat that itches and or boots that leave your feet cold can kill motivation Dana DeMaster Saint Paul MN 1 Getting to work faster than by taking the bus 3 Wear warm mittens and boots as those extremities always seem to get the coldest Amanda Plante Saskatoon SK 2 My homemade fl eece neck warmers do a great job of keeping me cozy but can also be pulled down anytime for ventilation 3 When its icy running two studded tires can really slow you down I like to ride fi xed in the winter with one studded tire in front and a slick in back The front tire gives you enough control and the back tire keeps you rolling a tad faster Besides fi shtailing and avoiding falling is excellent for your core muscles Jana Velo Minneapolis MN HOW TO STORE YOUR BIKE ALICE SHELBY JURACK If you need to store your summer bike or your only bike here are a few pointers for protecting your resting steed Before You Store Wipe down your bike with a softbristled brush and then a rag to remove debris and any remaining dirt or grime Check for any cracks or signs of metal fatigue Bring your bike in for a tune up before the winter season begins When spring rolls around you can avoid tune up lines and be ready to ride your bike after infl ating the tires If storing in an unheated garage public storage building or on an apartment balcony be sure to lubricate the chains and cables If you have a steel framed bike pre treat it to avoid rusting Infl ate your tires before storing or bring them inside for the winter months You could also store your bike upside down to reduce pressure on the tires Have a lock ready to secure your bike Storage Lockers Apartment storage lockers can be a great place to store your bike if you dont have room in your place but be sure to lock up the front and back wheel to the frame and the frame to a secure post or rack to prevent theft Take all removable parts lights saddle fenders bell etc up to your apartment Balconies Sometimes there is no other option Be sure to lock your bike to your balcony rails and cover it with a tarp to protect it from the elements Strip your bike of all removable and delicate parts such as leather seats and store them indoors Basement A basement that is safe and climate controlled is a good place to store your bike Make sure to avoid direct sunlight by placing your bike away from windows Check the tire pressure every few weeks to prevent fl at spots from developing in your tires Garage Consider hanging your bike to keep pressure off the tires and covering it with a bike tarp to keep moisture out Paid Storage If you have no room at home paid storage is a great option Not only are paid storage lockers usually climate controlled they are more secure than leaving your bike outdoors or in an apartment storage locker DOUG SCOTT MOMENTUMPLANET COM 33 NOV DEC 11
